Beyond commercial drone work, my camera finds its way to Northern California's waterways, wetlands, and wild spaces. Captured at sunset from Crown Point in Forest Ranch, this December landscape reveals the dramatic geology and atmospheric depth of Northern California's Cascade region. Golden hour light illuminates the volcanic rock formations in the foreground while layers of valley fog create a striking contrast against the distant snow-capped peaks. The 200mm focal length compresses the scene, emphasizing the layered mountain ridges receding into the distance. Thousands of snow geese and sandhill cranes lift off in unison during the evening fly-off at Llano Seco, creating a spectacular avian spectacle against the gradient sunset sky. The silhouetted birds form dynamic patterns across the pink, orange, and gold twilight as they depart the flooded rice fields for their overnight roosting sites. This mass movement occurs daily during winter months when the Sacramento Valley's wetlands host one of North America's largest concentrations of wintering waterfowl and cranes. The reflection of the sunset in the shallow floodwater below mirrors the warm tones above, while the distant Sutter Buttes provide a dark horizon line. You can't schedule a heron's perfect strike or orchestrate golden light hitting water at the exact moment a bird takes flight. You wait, you watch, you learn the rhythms of wild creatures, and eventually—if you're fortunate—the image reveals itself.
